Cell seconda generazione: pronto per i 6Ghz?

IBM, Sony e Toshiba sono al lavoro sulla seconda generazione del loro microprocessore Cell, attualmente usato sulla console Playstation 3 e nei blade servers QS20 di IBM. Secondo quanto si legge dal programma della  International Solid State Circuits Conference (PDF) la nuova versione del chip sarà in grado di raggiungere la ragguardevole velocità di clock di 6 Ghz.

I produttori di chip, nella loro scalata delle velocità di clock, si sono imbattuti principalmente in problemi di natura elettrica: consumi spropositati ed un'elevata dissipazione termica. AMD ed Intel hanno quindi seguito una strada alternativa, inserendo molteplici core nello stesso die di silicio; se questa soluzione garantisce prestazioni in ambito multi-tasking, risultano penalizzate in quelle a singolo task, dove una frequenza di clock più elevata garantisce prestazioni migliori.

L'attuale versione del Cell secondo specifiche è in grando di arrivare a 4Ghz, tuttavia il suo successore opererà ben oltre i 5ghz. Per il previsto modello da 6ghz si parla di consumi che si aggirano intorno ai 100W, quindi del tutto compatibili con quelli dei concorrenti Opteron di AMD e Xeon di Intel. Il programma della ISSCC menziona poi che il chip verrà prodotto interamente a 65nm ed avrà una doppia circuiteria di alimentazione, così da incrementare prestazioni e stabilità della SRAM, oltre che ridurre ulteriormente i consumi: infatti, pur avendo una velocità di 6ghz richiederà appena 1.3V.

Alla stessa conferenza poi sarà presente anche Intel, con un nuovo prototipo di chip con 80 core concentrati in una superficie di 275 millimetri quadrati, nella quale sono presenti ben 100 milioni di transistor. Il chip dissiperà 98W e sarà capace di 1.28 trilioni di operazioni al secondo. Sens'altro un traguardo notevole.

Lo scorso 5 gennaio nVidia ha pubblicato dei nuovi Forceware versione 97.46 per sistemi operativi Windows Vista RTM (quindi a partire dalla build 6000, le due beta sono escluse), sia in versione 64bit che x86. Questa release integra in nuovo nVidia Control Pannel che ben si presta all'integrazione con il nuovo OS. Nonostante sia stata migliorata la compatibilità con le applicazioni e le performance generali, manca ancora supporto alle nuove GeForce 8800 GTX e GTS.
