Nuovi Catalyst 3.6

E' tempo di aggiornamenti per la suite di drivers per schede ATi: i Catalyst arrivano infatti alla nuova release 3.6.

Keeping the tradition of frequent CATALYST updates, I would like to announce the availability of CATALYST 3.6. We are now picking up the pace of postings and providing our end users newer and better drivers. This posting updates the driver to version 7.91 The focus of this posting is compatibility and stability improvements

Some compatibility/stability fixes include:

* The game Unreal Tournament 2003 no longer hangs when loading the CTF-December level
* Flickering and display corruption in the game NeverWinter Nights is now resolved
* Multimedia mode scaling and positioning issues have now been resolved when using TV out
* Display corruption noticed on the ATI Demo Rachel running under Windows XP is now resolved
* The lighting and triangle culling on the 3D pipes screensaver no longer is incorrect when using a RADEON(tm) 7000 series card under Windows 2000
* Significant CPU usage is no longer noticed when Hardware Overlay Alpha Deblocking is in use

Detonator FX 44.90 Drivers Beta leaked

Il sito tedesco WinFuture ha pubblicato l'ultima versione beta dei Detonator FX di nVidia, targati 44.90. Il peso è di 7.6mb e si sono registrati dei leggeri miglioramenti in performance rispetto la precendente build e, trattandosi di una versione ancora non ufficiale, sono da utilizzare a proprio rischio e pericolo.

Utenti Linux: quale chipset?

Uno dei maggiori problemi degli utenti del sistema operativo open-source Linux è sicuramente la compatibilità. Se grandi passi sono stati fatti rispetto qualche anno fa, resta la non curanza dei produttori verso questa piattaforma, che manca di drivers ottimizzati.

Il sito LinuxHardware ha messo a confronto due schede madri diverse: la Asus A7N8x Deluxe 2.0 e la SOYO SY-KT400 DRAGON Ultra, rispettivamente con nForce 2 e KT400.

Nuovo Mozilla 1.4 finale

Gli sviluppatori del noto browser open-source Mozilla hanno appena rilasciato la versione 1.4 definitiva. Dalla "vecchia" versione 1.3 sono state implementate nuove features, nonchè corretti numerosi bug.

Se siete alla ricerca di un browser alternativo ad IE, troverete in Mozilla un valido sostituto.

ATi: hotfix per Catalyst 3.5

In seguito ad alcuni problemi più o meno gravi verificatosi con l'ultima release di driver Catalyst 3.5, ATi ha rilasciato 2 nuovi hot-fix per porvi rimedio.

Fix n.1
The information in this article applies to the following system configurations:
- ATI RADEON based graphics card
- CATALYST 3.5 driver suite
- NeverWinter Nights game from BioWare Corp.
Some users have reported that with the CATALYST 3.5 driver suite installed, objects within the game may experience severe flickering.
Other OpenGL games may also be affected.

Fix n.2
The information in this article applies to the following system configurations:
- ATI RADEON 9100 based graphics card
- CATALYST 3.5 driver suite
- OpenGL based applications (e.g. Half Life, Quake III Arena, etc)
When launching OpenGL accelerated applications, no OpenGL hardware rendering capable device will be found. For example, Half Life will report the following error message:
"The Selected OpenGL mode is not supported by your video card"

Anche se non siete stati vittima di questi bug, rimane pur sempre consigliato l'update.

La Sisoftware, casa conosciuta per lo sviluppo del diffusissimo Sandra ha rilasciato una nuova versione del proprio benchmark.
Sono stati aggiunti 2 benchmark relativi alla connessione internet: Internet/ISP Connection & Peerage Benchmarks.
E' stato aggiunto, in vista delle nuove cpu, il supporto per i 64bit.

Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003

In questi giorni Microsoft ha rilasciato la versione 2003 del suo sistema
operativo per palmari, Windows Mobile 2003.


Questo equipaggerà i dispositivi Pocket PC 2003 di prossima uscita e supporterà alcune interessanti ed innovative funzionalità, tra cui segnaliamo: configurazione di reti senza fili Wi-Fi, supporto alla tecnologia Bluetooth, supporto avanzato a servizi di messaggistica e contatti, nuovo Calendario e programma di visualizzazione immagini, supporto a Windows Media Player 9, migliorato il Pocket Internet Explorer (pIE) e poco altro.

Si tratta quindi di un software per la copia di DVD-Video sui normali DVD-+R/RW senza perdita percettibile di qualità, mantenendo la struttura dei menu e degli extra grazie all'algoritmo di transcoding ad elevata qualità.

Questo programma è stato dichiarato compatibile con la maggior parte dell'hardware per DVD quali lettori e masterizzatori, fattore molto positivo se si pensa al grosso limite del fratello minore CloneCD, il quale richiedeva componenti particolari per dare il meglio di sè.


Anche la facilità d'uso e la velocità sono punti di forza di questo nuovo software che si propone quindi anche all'utente meno esperto.

Win FS: il file system del futuro

Tom's Hardware ha dedicato spazio all'analisi del nuovo file siystem presente sulle versioni di sviluppo del successore dell'attuale sistema operativo Windows XP, nome in codice Longhorn.


Il nuovo file system denominato Win FS (Future Storage) sarà altamente rivoluzionario poichè sarà il primo tentativo di gestire i dati dei pc casalinghi tramite un database relazionale, permettendo nuovi e più veloci criteri di ricerca. La struttura a directory a cui siamo da sempre abituati perderà lentamente importanza in favore di file indicizzati fortemente associativi e cross-linked come in un database SQL.

The new file system is designed to store files based on various content criteria, e.g., author, contents, names, source medium and the most recent user. The folder structure shown in the Windows Explorer is thus reduced to a virtual map. Directory structures provide some guidance but do not say where data is actually stored, how the system organizes files or the nature of any data pointers stored with them.

La differenza tra la precedente FAT16, FAT32 e il più attuale NTFS non sta solo nella possibilità di indicizzare maggiori quantità di dati, che si traduce nella possibilità di utilizzare dischi o array di enormi dimensioni, permettendo però ricerche molto più veloci ed efficienti.
