Well, I have two things to say now: a good one and a bad one. A good thing is that the new generation IDE hard disk drives from Maxtor and Seagate are in general faster than their predecessors. Although there is a certain difference between the idea of a new IDE HDD from each of the manufacturers. Maxtor stakes higher data density at the expense of actuator speed, while Seagate made half a step towards data density increase and another half a step towards access time improvement. Which approach will win the customers' hearts, is a good question now…
However, despite all the differences Maxtor and Seagate agree that a contemporary HDD should be:
Reliable;
Low-cost;
Quiet.
And the bad thing is that both companies reduced the warranty period to one year only.
